PINURI ni Tingog Party-list Rep. Jude Acidre ang Bureau of Customs (BOC) noong Biyernes sa pagsasampa ng kasong kriminal laban sa mga opisyal ng cargo handling firm na inakusahan ng pag-abandona sa libu-libong balikbayan boxes na ipinadala ng mga overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) sa kanilang mga pamilya.

Ayon kay Acidre, ang pagsasampa ng kaso ay patunay na hindi tutulog-tulog ang pamahalaan laban sa mga mapang-abuso at pasaway na cargo handling firms at operators.

Mismong si BOC Commissioner Ariel Nepomuceno ang nag-file ng complaints sa Department of Justice laban sa mga officers ng Makati Express Cargo Inc. dahil sa pag-abandona sa 117 40-foot containers na may lamang 36,826 balikbayan boxes na nakatengga sa ports of Manila, Cebu at Davao.

Ayon sa BOC, 65 containers na may 19,671 boxes ang naka-consign sa Manila International Container Port, 50 containers na may 16,431 boxes ang dumating mula sa Port of Cebu, habang dalawang container na may 724 boxes ang ipinadala galing sa Port of Davao.

“We commend the Bureau of Customs for filing criminal complaints against the cargo firm and responsible officers involved in the abandonment and non-delivery of thousands of balikbayan boxes meant for OFW families across the country. This decisive action sends a clear message: the sacrifices of our OFWs will no longer be treated carelessly, and those who abuse their trust will be held accountable,” dagdag ng mambabatas.

Ito ang dahilan, ayon kay Acidre, kung bakit kailangan ng safeguards sa mga balikbayan box system dahil pinaghirapang kitain ng mga OFWs ang pinambili ng mga laman nito, at basta na lang mawawala at hindi matatanggap ng kanilang pamilya.

“Every balikbayan box is more than a package. It carries the hard work, love, and sacrifice of our OFWs for their families back home. When these boxes are abandoned, delayed, or mishandled, it is not just property that is lost. It is the dignity and trust of our migrant workers that are violated,” saad ng mambabatas.
