KARACHI, Pakistan – US President Donald Trump on Saturday said that both Pakistan and India have reached a “full and immediate” ceasefire after days of intense fighting.

“After a long night of talks mediated by the United States, I am pleased to announce that India and Pakistan have agreed to a FULL AND IMMEDIATE CEASEFIRE. Congratulations to both Countries on using Common Sense and Great Intelligence,” Trump said on social media.

The development came hours after Pakistan launched a retaliatory operation on Saturday morning in response to Indian military strikes on Tuesday on what it said were “terrorist” targets inside Pakistan.

Shortly after Trump’s post, Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar wrote on X: “Pakistan and India have agreed to a ceasefire with immediate effect. Pakistan has always strived for peace and security in the region, without compromising its sovereignty and territorial integrity!”

Dar further said that Türkiye, Saudi Arabia UK and other countries’ foreign ministers played a “key” role in reaching a ceasefire.

Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri also confirmed the development, saying: “The Director General of Military Operations of Pakistan called the Director General of Military Operations of India at 15:35 hours, earlier this afternoon. It was agreed between them that both sides would stop all firing and military action on land, in the air, and sea with effect from 17:00 hours Indian Standard Time today.”

“Instructions have been given on both sides to give effect to this understanding,” he said, adding: “The director generals of military operations will talk again on the 12th of May.”

In a separate statement on X, Indian Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar said that New Delhi has “consistently maintained a firm and uncompromising stance against terrorism in all its forms and manifestations. It will continue to do so.”

‘Wisdom, prudence, and statesmanship’

Pakistan reopened its airspace for all kinds of flights minutes after the ceasefire announcement, the country’s Civil Aviation Authority said.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio appreciated Pakistani and Indian leaders for their “wisdom, prudence, and statesmanship in choosing the path of peace. India and Pakistan have today worked out an understanding on the stoppage of firing and military action,” Rubio said in a post on X.

“Over the past 48 hours, @VP Vance and I have engaged with senior Indian and Pakistani officials, including Prime Ministers Narendra Modi and Shehbaz Sharif, External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, Chief of Army Staff (Pakistan) Gen. Asim Munir, and National Security Advisors Ajit Doval (India) and Asim Malik (Pakistan),” he went on to say.

“I am pleased to announce the Governments of India and Pakistan have agreed to an immediate ceasefire and to start talks on a broad set of issues at a neutral site,” Rubio maintained. PNA/Anadolu
