KINILALA ng Forbes si Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmonte bilang isa sa 50 sustainability leaders sa mundo dahil sa kanyang maigting na kampanya laban sa climate change.

Kasama ni Belmonte sa listahan ng Forbes ang mga miyembro ng C40 Cities na sina Mayors Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr ng Freetown, Sierra Leone; Anne Hidalgo ng Paris, France; at Michelle Wu ng Boston at ang iba’t-ibang entrepreneur, siyentista, pilontropo, mamumuhunan, pulitiko at activist na nangunguna sa paglaban sa climate change.

“The 50 honorees recognized as Forbes inaugural Sustainability Leaders span industries and disciplines while all demonstrating exceptional ambition, innovation, and recent, tangible impact that is both scalable and sustainable,” anang Forbes.

“This first class of Sustainability Leaders highlights individuals driving real and lasting impact.

We honor them for their vision and stewardship of our planet and to showcase the creative, inspiring solutions they are leading from the lab to the boardroom,” dagdag ng Forbes.

Ikinasiya ni Belmonte ang pagkilala na ayon sa kanya isang mahalagang kaganapan dahil nabibigyang pansin ang pagsisikap ng pamahalaang lungsod na labanan ang climate change at ang mga epekto nito sa mga tao at sa kalikasan.

“We are extremely honored to be part of this inaugural list. This further solidifies our commitment to combating climate change and its negative impact on the environment and our QCitizens,” ani Belmonte.

“It will also inspire our local government to continue discovering and implementing vital solutions that contribute to a healthier planet for current and future generations.

We have to act fast and decisively on this problem,” dagdag pa ng alkalde.

Kinilala ng Forbes ang desisyon ni Belmonte na ilagay ang Quezon City, isa sa may pinakamaraming residents sa bansa, sa ilalim ng climate emergency pagka-upo niya bilang alkalde noong 2019.

“That move allowed Belmonte to allocate 13 percent of the city’s budget (which has since increased) to climate initiatives to reach its stated goals of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 30 percent by 2030 and reaching net-zero by 2050,” sabi pa ng Forbes.

Pinuri din ng Forbes ang iba’t-ibang inisyatibong pangkalikasan na ipinatupad ni Belmonte, kabilang na dito ang pagdagdag sa mga bike path network sa lungsod na ma 217 kilometro, paggamit ng electric free bus service at ang pagdagdag ng mga solar panel sa mga pampublikong gusali.

Bukod dito, ipinagbawal din ng lungsod ang mga plastic bag at single-use utensils; ang pag-introduce ng “trash-to-cashback” program, at pagtatayo ng mga refilling station para sa liquid detergent at iba pang pambahay na produkto.
