NANAWAGAN si Senate President Francis “Chiz” Escudero sa publiko na magpakita ng respeto , maging mahinahon at galangin ang batas kasunod ng mapayapang pag-aresto kay dating Pangulong Rodrigo Duterte alinsunod sa warrant mula sa Interpol na inisyu ng International Criminal Court (ICC).

Binigyang-diin ni Escudero ang kahalagahan ng pagsunod sa batas habang sinisiguro na mabibigyan si Duterte ng nararapat na due process.

“The peaceful and orderly service of the Interpol warrant—carried out without incident—reflects our nation’s commitment to upholding international agreements, as well as the maturity, civility, calm, and professionalism of all those involved: our law enforcement authorities, former President Rodrigo R. Duterte, his lawyers, and his supporters,” ayon kay Escudero.

Ang warrant ng ICC ay batay sa mga paratang ng crimes against humanity kaugnay ng kanyang kampanya kontra droga, na nagresulta sa libu-libong pagkamatay.

Ayon sa opisyal na tala ng gobyerno, higit sa 6,000 ang namatay, ngunit giit ng mga human rights groups, mas mataas pa ang totoong bilang.

Binigyang-diin din ni Escudero ang kahalagahan ng pagsunod sa mga legal na prinsipyo at pandaigdigang kasunduan. “As this legal process unfolds, we expect the International Criminal Court (ICC) to respect the rights of former President Duterte and to ensure that he is afforded due process in accordance with the Rule of Law,” aniya.

Aminado si Escudero na magiging masalimuot ang usapin dahil sa iba’t ibang pananaw hinggil sa kaso.

“This development will undoubtedly elicit diverse reactions shaped by differing perspectives on the allegations against the former president, from the families of victims of extra-judicial killings to his loyal supporters,” dagdag niya.

Dahil nalalapit na rin ang midterm elections, nagbabala si Escudero laban sa paggamit ng isyu para sa pansariling pulitikal na interes.

“I also call on those running in the midterm elections to refrain from using this issue to fan the flames of partisanship in order to further their candidacies as this is a serious issue that involves lives and should not be trifled with for petty personal or political gain,” aniya.

Nanawagan siya ng pagkakaisa sa gitna ng kasalukuyang proseso, binibigyang-diin na ang lakas ng bansa ay nasa kakayahan nitong magkaisa sa kabila ng pagkakaiba ng pananaw.

“It is in our nation’s best interests to demonstrate our strength not by division, but by our capacity to rise above our differences and to collectively and peacefully uphold justice and accountability,” pahayag niya.

Ang pag-aresto kay Duterte ay isang makasaysayang pangyayari, kung saan siya ang kauna-unahang dating pinuno ng estado sa Asya na hinuli sa bisa ng ICC warrant.

Umatras ang Pilipinas mula sa ICC noong 2019 matapos simulan ang imbestigasyon sa kanyang drug war policies. Sa kabila nito, iginigiit ng ICC ang hurisdiksyon nito sa mga kasong naganap habang miyembro pa ng bansa.

Habang haharap si Duterte sa paglilitis sa The Hague, binibigyang-diin ng panawagan ni Escudero ang balanseng pagtrato sa usapin ng hustisya at pambansang katatagan.
