SUMALI ang Quezon City sa global network of cities upang tumulong sa pagresolba sa extreme heat.

Ayon kay Mayor Joy Belmonte, bahagi ang pagsapi nila sa C40 Cities Cool Cities Accelerator sa pagsisikap ng pamahalaang lungsod sa pagprotekta sa kapaligiran.

Kinukonsidera ang matinding init na isa sa mga deadliest weather-related hazards sa buong mundo dahil umaabot sa may 489,000 na tao ang nanamatay kada taon dahil dito.

Dadami pang mga tao ang malalantad sa life-threatening urban heat pagdating ng 2050 kapag hindi agad ito inaksyunan.

Nakaranas ang lungsod ng matinding init noong 2023 na nagbunsod sa pagkansela ng mga klase, pag-ikli ng oras ng klase at pag-shift sa alternative teaching modalities.

“Extreme heat greatly affects our communities, livelihood, and overall way of living. It affected our schools and production of our urban farms, and put our residents at risk of heat-related illnesses,” ani Belmonte.

Tinatag ng C40 ang Accelerator sa pakikipagtambal sa The Rockefeller Foundation, at may suporta mula sa ClimateWorks Foundation at Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.

Nagbibigay ang Accelerator, bilang suporta sa COP30 Beat the Heat action agenda, ng isang practical, science-based framework para sa mga lungsod upang magtulungan sa pagresolba sa pagdaigdigang banta na ito.

Pag-iibayuhin din ng pamahalaang lungsod ang mga building code upang panatilihing ligtas ang indoor temperatures, pagdagdag ng shade at tree canopy sa mga pampublikong lugat at future-proofing critical infrastructure sa loob ng limang taon.

“Extreme heat is a silent killer and an increasingly urgent global threat,” ani Mark Watts, Executive Director ng C40 Cities.

“The number of days that major capitals experience temperatures above 35°C has increased 54% over the past twenty years. Cities like Quezon City are showing real leadership by taking practical steps to protect communities, safeguard economies, and create more liveable urban environments.

By aligning with the UN Secretary-General’s call to action on extreme heat, these cities are helping to set a global standard for what bold, collective climate leadership looks like,” sabi ni Watts.

Pinagsama-sama ng Cool Cities Accelerator ang may 33 na lungsod na kumakatawan sa may mahigit na 143 milyong tao mula sa bawat rehiyon kabilang na ang Austin, Boston, Buenos Aires, Freetown, Nairobi, Phoenix, Singapore, at Paris.

Sa pamamagitan ng pagbahagi ng mga estratehiya at mga proven solution, makaka-aksyon agad ang mga lungsod.
