NAGPAHAYAG ng buong suporta si Deputy Speaker Paolo Ortega ng La Union sa panawagan ng mga pangunahing business groups sa bansa na muling pag-aralan ng Korte Suprema ang desisyon nitong nagbasura sa impeachment case laban kay Vice President Sara Duterte.

Binigyang-diin ni Ortega na ang apela ng Makati Business Club, Management Association of the Philippines, Integrity Initiative, at Justice Reform Initiative ay malinaw na sumasalamin sa pangamba ng publiko sa paghina ng transparency at accountability sa pamahalaan

“This is not just a legal debate. It is a test of our commitment to truth, fairness and constitutional checks,” ayon kay Ortega.

Dagdag pa niya: “When leading business groups warn that impunity is being institutionalized, the Court must listen. Transparency is non-negotiable, and accountability cannot be optional.”

Sa kanilang pinagsamang pahayag, hinimok ng mga business group ang Korte Suprema na muling gampanan ang tungkulin nitong ipagtanggol ang Konstitusyon. Binigyang-diin nila na ang naging desisyon ay maaaring makasama sa rule of law, makabawas sa tiwala ng publiko sa mga institusyon ng pamahalaan, at makapagpahina ng kumpiyansa ng mga mamumuhunan.

“The decision of the Court as it stands sends a dangerous signal throughout the bureaucracy that abuse of power and corruption carry no consequence,” ayon sa joint statement ng grupo.

Iginiit pa ni Ortega na ang impeachment ay hindi dapat gamiting sandata sa politika, kundi isang mahalagang mekanismo upang mapanatili ang transparency at pananagutan sa gobyerno

“Impeachment exists to protect the people and ensure accountability at the highest levels of government,” paliwanag ng mambabatas.

“Blocking even the initiation of that process through legal technicalities deprives the public of their right to know—and their right to demand answers,” dagdag pa ng kongresista.

Una ng ibinasura ng Korte Suprema ang kaso dahil umano sa paglabag sa one-year bar rule matapos maihain ang ikaapat na reklamo noong Pebrero 2025. Pero ayon sa mga negosyante, mali ang basa ng Korte dahil hindi dapat bilangin ang mga naunang reklamo na hindi naman umabot sa House Committee on Justice.

Kinuwestiyon din nila ang pahayag ng SC na nawalan ng due process si VP Duterte, dahil ang impeachment ay hindi naman itinuturing na criminal o administrative proceeding.

“The Court, by its decision in this case as it stands, unfortunately prevented due process from happening,” ayon sa mga grupo.

Giit pa nila, ayon mismo sa Article XI ng Konstitusyon, ang impeachment ay nilikha upang ipaglaban ang karapatan ng taumbayan. “It is not to shield a government official from the rigors of defending himself or herself, but to safeguard the people’s right to demand accountability from those who wield authority supposedly on their behalf,” dagdag pa ng mga negosyante.

Sinegundahan din ito ni Ortega, at nagbabala na ang ginawang interpretasyon ng SC sa Konstitusyon ay maaaring magbigay daan sa labis na kapangyarihan na hindi na maaaring suriin.

“What the Court has done is create a shield for high-ranking officials to avoid scrutiny. That sets a dangerous precedent and weakens the very foundation of democratic accountability,” paliwanag pa ng kongresista.

Binanggit din niya na maaaring makakasama ito sa ekonomiya dahil tataas ang gastos ng negosyo, maaantala ang suplay, at bababa ang tiwala ng mga mamumuhunan

“You cannot separate transparency from economic resilience. If institutions appear unwilling or unable to hold officials accountable, confidence—both political and financial—begins to crumble,” sabi ni Ortega.

Nanawagan siya sa SC na seryosohin ang motion for reconsideration at ibalik ang integridad ng proseso sa pamamagitan ng pagpayag na ituloy ang kaso batay sa merito nito.

“This is not about partisanship. It is about principle. The Constitution gives the people a right to demand accountability—and that right must not be denied through procedural shortcuts,” ayon sa mambabatas.

“Let the truth come out. Let transparency prevail,” diin pa ni Ortega.
