INAASAHANG dudumugin ang 60,000 metric tons ng naluluma ng bigas na io-auction ng Department of Agriculture (DA) sa Oktubre.

Sinabi ni DA Secretary Francisco P. Tiu Laurel Jr. na naghahanda na ang National Food Authority (NFA) para sa auction.

Tugon sa panawagan ni President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. ang pagsubasta sa mga bigas para tulungang tumaas ang presyo ng palay kapag peak harvest.

“Make no mistake—we expect critics to pounce the moment we hold the auction. They’ll say the rice is weevil-infested, of poor quality, and accuse us of negligence. But this is the inevitable consequence of stripping the NFA of its full powers under the Rice Tariffication Law,” sabi ni Tiu Laurel na chairman din ng NFA Council.

Sinisisi ng kalihim ang RTL dahil hindi agad mailabas ang mga rice stocks at hindi rin nakapa-invest sa mga tamang storage infrastructure gaya ng temperature-controlled warehouses.

“Unless we’re allowed to manage our stocks more efficiently and invest in long-term storage, spoilage will continue to haunt us,” babala ni Tiu Laurel.

Layunin din ng auction na maiwasan ang aims kakulangan sa supply, lumikha ng warehouse spaces para sa mga bagong aning palay ng mga farmers at maidispatsa na ang mga nabubulok ng palay. Tatlong buwan lang ang buhay ng palay pagkatapos maging bigas.

Sa kasalukuyan, may 450,000 metric tons na buffer ang NFA na sapat para sa 12 araw ng emergency national supply.

Umaabot lang sa 1.2 million na sako, o 13% ng buffer, ang io-auction.
